Welcome to Class Two!
Class Two is where the children in Year 1 and Year 2 learn and strive to be ‘the best they can be’. Their learning is supported by Miss Bontoft (Class Teacher), Mrs Sellers (Teaching Assistant) and Miss Bond (Teaching Assistant) and Miss Drayton (Teaching Assistant). Sometimes Year 1 and Year 2 children learn all together in one group, and at other times we learn separately. We are lucky enough to learn across two classrooms - in the main room, in which you might find children accessing continuous provision or independent challenges, and we also have our quiet learning room, where our pupils can be found being very busy and engaged in focused tasks. We are currently looking forward to making use of our brand new outside area, which will be finished very soon! We are very fortunate at St Martin's to also have access to a wonderful 'Forest School' area, which Class 2 pupils love to explore!
This term, (Spring 1 2022), our topic is called 'Toys'. We are learning about the history of toys and how they have changed over the 19th, 20th and 21st century. We will have lots of opportunities to explore a range of old and new toys, and will consider how they have changed, how they work, what they are made of and will discuss which toys we find the most fun to play with. We will be linking this closely with our Science topic this term, 'Everyday Materials', in which we will be sorting and describing the properties of materials including wood, plastic, metal, rock, glass, paper and fabric. The children will also be designing and creating their own 'paper toys' in D&T. For more information about our learning this term, please see the Term Curriculum Coverage document below.
In Class 2, homework is set each Friday, through our Class 2 Microsoft Teams page. Homework tasks are linked to the learning which has taken place in class that week - sometimes it will be a creative tasks, a written task, or something practical. Word lists (for reading and writing) are also uploaded fortnightly, linked to the Sounds-Write units the children are working on in school. We encourage all children to read at home as often as possible, aiming for a minimum of three times per week. Each child will receive a bookmark at the start of the year, and will earn a sticker for their bookmark for each week that they manage to read at least three times at home.
Each week, one pupil from Year 1 and one from Year 2 are chosen to receive a Head Teacher's Award, in recognition of their hard work, positive attitude or for displaying one of our Church School Values, such as resilience, or respect. It is a real achievement to have been picked, out of all the children in your class, for a HTA, and we therefore invite parents to join us when the certificates are presented, on Monday afternoons at 2:30.
This term, we are introducing a new award, for fantastic efforts with Handwriting - one pupil per week will be awarded this prize, which includes a certificate and a fancy pen!
PE days for Class 2 are Monday and Wednesday
